Introduction
Welcome to the Branching Scenarios Tool “Environmental Law and Climate Justice: Case Study on the East African Crude Oil Pipeline”! This digital tool was developed as part of a seminar held by the Chair of African Legal Studies at the University Bayreuth in winter term 2024/25. Students participated in a case study on the East African Crude Oil Pipeline. The focus of the case study was the intersection between energy access and human rights in the context of EACOP as well as understanding international human rights law through branching scenarios. During the phase of the seminar, the students were asked the guiding question: What legal and non-legal avenues are available at the national, sub-regional, regional, and international level to claim rights in relation to the EACOP project? The students research resulted in an interactive tool, which was developed to guide users – like you – through the various legal and non-legal avenues available for addressing rights violations related to EACOP. The tool provides tailored information on different options while also incorporating quizzes to engage users and enhance their understanding of the different litigation processes. By actively involving users, the tool aims not only to inform but also to educate them on the complexities of legal action and empowering them to navigate potential avenues for justice more effectively. Before you start, we would like to highlight the following:
- The tool was developed between October 2024 and February 2025. Developments after this period are not reflected.
- The content was processed by the participants of the seminar, and we assume no liability for its accuracy.
- The different options presented are not evaluated by us in terms of their prospects of success. We simply introduce some of the available options.
- Feel free to share this tool if you believe it might be useful.
